Actually, this already existed.

Enviar a Gmail (Send to Gmail) does just this, but is based on Blat and Stunnel, which are open source (and so you know nobody is looking at your login information) plus it uses secure connections

Handy app, but I will just do it the old fashioned way for now.

Here's what would be cool. Since GMail storage space is too small to backup everything you wanna back up, the app could have you do an initial backup to a DVD+R or two, and then it could automatically and periodically create the smaller *incremental* backup file, and send that to your Gmail account.

I've been using Gmail Drive Shell Extension for a while now. It does the same thing. Right-click on a file, choose Send To Gmail Drive. It creates a virtual hard drive in My Computer that you can drag and drop files to as well...

This is an extremely easy idea to do in Automator on the Mac...

Here's what I did:

Action 1: Get Selected Finder Items

Action 2: New Mail message (include your own e-mail, a subject, and any text you want in the body)

Action 3: Send Outgoing messages.

Save the item as a Plugin for Finder. When you right click on any item in the finder, and click Automator, you'll see the Automator workflow you just created.

I just did it and it works LIKE A CHARM.

Thanks for the inspiration on this one. Very useful idea!

@vividblurry: Sorry to hear that. It installed without a problem on my extremely gunkified system.

Is anyone else having a hard time installing this? It won't complete the install because a file its trying to change is in use, but I already closed out of all of my apps. Kinda frustrating.

Why not just create a PST in Outlook and move e-mails that you want to save to that. You can back it up to CD, to an external drive, or just leave it on your PC's hard drive.

Well if it is personal, password protect it and .rar it.

I think this is a good idea, I have installed we will see.

@monkeyboy: I'd say any document you'd be loathe to lose. Gmail is as safe as any online repository; probably safer. That said, if security is a concern, make a backup to a flash drive instead.

This is a nifty idea, however it is not the first of its kind.

I have been using This GMail Drive shell extension - http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm - for quite some time. This program creates a virtual drive on your computer, allowing you to drag-and drop files right into your Google email account.

What kind of documents are people using to backup to Gmail? I dont think personal documents should be put on Gmail, maybe im being paranoid? :)

If you set up your GMail for POP access, presuming you have another POP account (who doesn't), you can just email attachemnts to your GMail. The file-splitting on this 11 meg bloat may be worth it, but I doubt it.

[mail.google.com]

How about something around 200k instead?

Is nobody else weary of punching their Gmail password into just any software? I mean, I'm not generally a paranoid person when it comes to web technology, but I don't see any information on who made it or anything.

Tried, and worked like a charm.

Just a little concern that my firewall keeps saying that the program keep trying to make a connection to gmailer.zapto.org:8443. What's this for?

Too bad, I think I will stop using this convenient program until the reason for my concern is clear.

Oh my god, its size is 11Mb!

Did this guy put Java runtime into the distribution or what?

The same task can be done using small sweet VBScript...

Why not just create a PST and copy your e-mail to that. You can put the PST on CD or thumb drive and always have it. Plus, you can password protect the PST for further security.
