Guys......thanks for pointing our Sketchup. I've been playing on it for a few hours and I think it's a great little app (the video tutorials were really neat too. So I will third (or is it fourth - I've lost count) the above comments.

Be warned however, it runs really well on my desktop, but it will not work on my notebook. After a bit of digging on the forums, this would seem to be due to a problem with ATI Radeon graphics cards. If you've got one of these, you might want to check the forums.

Another vote for Google SketchUp here. I designed my entire setup on my computer without lifting my bed, futon, or tv. Free, easy to use, and works smoothly on my budget computer. Haven't tried Furnish yet in comparison though becuase it's a pain to download.

Since I will almost certainly be moving into a new place myself soon and (hopefully) getting some new furniture, I've recently been scouting out a few low-cost alternatives to the expensive home design software packages (especially since I'll probably be moving into another studio apartment and therefore have no use for many of the features they include). One online option I came across is Arrange-A-Room on the website for Better Homes And Gardens Magazine, which appears to be free and can be found here:

Another online option which at least looks interesting (even though they charge a fee) is Plan3D -- http://www.plan3d.com. They apparently charge about $3 per month, but the advantage appears to be a sizeable library of 3D objects and they apparently take requests for additional objects to be designed and added to the library.

The website which hosts Furnish is apparently a furniture/housewares merchant so it's reasonable to assume that most if not all of the objects in the software are representations of their product line, but I agree that it's a refreshing and very intelligent approach to selling furniture.

Ikea has something similar that you don't have to download. For some reason it's only in the Business section of the website, but as far as I can tell, you can add any furniture that you'd have in a room in your home.

I'm still d/ling it on a fast connection.

However I would like to say this is a good concept for the company (and a SMART one). Give software away that accomplishes a task consumers need and allow them to buy the products need to complete the task from you!
